Genesis 35:2
So Jacob said to his household and to all who were with him, “Get rid of the foreign gods you have with you, and purify yourselves and change your clothes.
Genesis 35:4
So they gave Jacob all the foreign gods they had and the rings in their ears, and Jacob buried them under the oak at Shechem.
Shalom.sdr, my devotion today, Fri, Nov. 13, GODS (Gen. 35:2, 4). Finally, we can see clearly, that there were many gods in the Jacob’s household. Jacob already knew about this. He didn’t ask them, whether they had foreign gods or not. He directly ordered them to get rid of the foreign gods. But, why did he not order them to throw away before? Perhaps, he didn’t have or worship the material gods directly. But by allowing the gods existing in his household was the same by loving that gods. Therefore, this time, he wanted to get rid of them totally.
a. Took them all out.
Not only 1, but all.of them.
b. Buried them.
Bury as the sign of mortification. It was the symbol of death. No more gods in the life.
c. Go away from them.
Not leaving around and close to the gods.
d. Bury the earrings.
The things that can make them remember the gods were also thrown away. Not only the gods per se, but also all of the things which may connect them with the gods were cut off. They got out clean and new. Then, they came before God. Let’s copy them. Throw away all gods and things which connect us to gods and come clean before God. ASH.
