2 Samuel 19:32
Now Barzillai was very old, eighty years of age. He had provided for the king during his stay in Mahanaim, for he was a very wealthy man.
2 Samuel 19:35
I am now eighty years old. Can I tell the difference between what is enjoyable and what is not? Can your servant taste what he eats and drinks? Can I still hear the voices of male and female singers? Why should your servant be an added burden to my lord the king?
2 Samuel 19:37
Let your servant return, that I may die in my own town near the tomb of my father and mother. But here is your servant Kimham. Let him cross over with my lord the king. Do for him whatever you wish.”
Shalom sdr, my devotion today, Thu, July 22, BARZILAI (II Sam. 19:32, 35, 37). Barzilai was a friend of David. He was a Gileadite. He was 80 years old. In his age, actually, he was not very old. Caleb had the same age. Even, older. Caleb was 85 years old, when he asked to Joshua to give him the heaviest and the hardest area, Hebron to him as his inheritance. Here, Barzilai didn’t want to do anything else.
1. He felt old.
Old is just a feeling. He felt that he had been very old. Moses had just started his ministry at 80 years old. Caleb was much older than him but never said that he was old.
2. He felt enough.
He had everything in his age. He was very wealthy. He had enough for his age. He even able to provide food for other people, for David and his men for example. He just didn’t want more. He just felt enough.
3. He felt almost dead.
He felt that his age would be not too long anymore. He thought that he would die soon. He just had no more passion to go with David to Jerusalem. He just didn’t want any further journeys, new experiences, surprises or anything else. He just wanted to prepare his death. He wanted to die in his hometown. He wanted to die next to his father and mother. Do we feel old? Do we feel enough? Do we feel almost dead? Let’s be spiritful. ASH.
