Judges 9:5
He went to his father’s home in Ophrah and on one stone murdered his seventy brothers, the sons of Jerub-Baal. But Jotham, the youngest son of Jerub-Baal, escaped by hiding.
Shalom sdr, my devotion today, Mon, May 17, BROTHERS (Judg. 9:5). Brothers are related one to another. They come from the same blood, the same womb, the same family and the same name. Brothers should protect, stand beside and love to each other. But what we read in this story is horrible. Abimelech killed his 70 brothers on 1 stone. He didn’t kill 1 person. This was not any person. This was his uncle, his brother. And he killed 70 of his uncles. Nobody said anything. Nobody stopped. Nobody cared.
a. The brother.
How could a brother kill his own brother? How could a brother be so cruel and evil, seeing his own brothers dead in front of his eyes?
b. The killing.
He killed on 1 same stone. If we see a person kills animals cruelly, we fell disgusting. Perhaps, we will stop eating meats from that day ever. Those brothers were killed publicly, openly and cruelly. Everybody could see, including the children. How could be a person so cruel?
c. The follower.
Why didn’t he make the brothers become his people, friends and followers? Why did he have to kill them all? Why did he believe to the scoundrels more than his own brothers? Let’s enjoy the sweet relationship in our brotherhood. ASH.
