1 Kings 19:20
Elisha then left his oxen and ran after Elijah. “Let me kiss my father and mother goodbye,” he said, “and then I will come with you.” “Go back,” Elijah replied. “What have I done to you?”
1 Kings 19:21
So Elisha left him and went back. He took his yoke of oxen and slaughtered them. He burned the plowing equipment to cook the meat and gave it to the people, and they ate. Then he set out to follow Elijah and became his servant.
Shalom sdr, my devotion today, Sun, Aug. 15, COMMIT (I Kg. 19:20-21). A calling requires serios commitment. Here, God called Elisha to be the successor of Elijah. Elisha didn’t refuse or postpone the calling. He immediately prepared himself to follow God’s calling. He showed his serious commitment by:
1. Leaving his parents.
He went to see the parents, said thanks and kissed good by. He knew his parents would feel lost, but they were happy too at the same time, that their son was called to be God’s prophet.
2. Slaughtering his oxen.
He slaughtered his beloved and faithful friend. So far, it had accompanied and helped him to plow the field. He slaughtered it as a symbol not to earn life and depend on it again. He depended on God. He followed God. He waited for God.
3. Burning the plowing instruments and yoke.
He burned them all to cook the oxen meat and ate it. He burned everything, so he had no more tools. So he could not start over again to plow. So he won’t be tempted to come back. He surrendered all. He left all. He burned all. No matter what happened, he had to move forward. We have to be serious in any calling that God calls us. ASH.
