1 Kings 12:28
After seeking advice, the king made two golden calves. He said to the people, “It is too much for you to go up to Jerusalem. Here are your gods, Israel, who brought you up out of Egypt.”
1 Kings 12:29
One he set up in Bethel, and the other in Dan.
1 Kings 12:31
Jeroboam built shrines on high places and appointed priests from all sorts of people, even though they were not Levites.
1 Kings 12:32
He instituted a festival on the fifteenth day of the eighth month, like the festival held in Judah, and offered sacrifices on the altar. This he did in Bethel, sacrificing to the calves he had made. And at Bethel he also installed priests at the high places he had made.
Shalom sdr, my devotion today, Sun, Aug. 8, SET UP (I Kg. 12:28, 29, 31, 32). Jeroboam threw so much effort to make the people forget the true God. He did many things to accomplish his plan.
1. He set up gods.
He made 2 gods at once to replace the true God. How could the people don’t realize that the true God couldn’t be made by human hands?
2. He set up shrines.
He built and set up 2 new shrines for those gods, so the people could go there to worship. How could the people also don’t realize that the true God was already “located” and worshipped at the temple in Jerusalem?
3. He set up priests.
Priests should be according to God’s will and rules. At least, the priests should be ordained and installed in the name of God. Here, Jeroboam chose and set up the priests without following God’s will and rules. He chose whoever he wanted. No ordination. No organization.
4. He set up festivals.
He set up festivals to be celebrated for the gods. He wanted the people to be tied continuously to the gods. He wanted the people to focus on the gods. He was very serious to make the people forget about the true God. We have to be careful not to go ashtray from the true God. ASH.
